Welcome!

Thank you for purchasing the Bernie ][ The Rescue Starter Kit. Bernie ][ The Rescue is the premier Apple IIgs emulation software for Power Macintosh computers!

Included on this disk are a copy of Bernie ][ The Rescue 3.0, copies of System 6.0.1 disk images, and prepared Hard Drive images to quickly get you up and running with Bernie. For your convenience we have also provided a copy of the Bernie ][ Support files that you will find on the Bernie ][ Web Site.

To let Bernie start working for you, you will need to make a copy of your IIgs ROM. To be able to use Bernie fully, you will also need to register it.

Requirements:

Bernie ][ The Rescue 3.0 requires a Power Macintosh running at least MacOS 8.5 or later. If you have an older system version, or have problems running Bernie 3.0, you will find version 2.6, version 2.5.9, and earlier versions of Bernie in the folder 'Let Sleeping Dogs Lie' on the CD-ROM desktop. Version 2.5.9 will often run where 2.6 or 3.0 will not. The older versions of Bernie do not have all the neat features that you will find in Bernie 3.0, so it would be well worth upgrading your system to 8.6 if you can.

Bernie 2.5.9 is the same as Bernie 2.6 except for very minor cosmetic differences. The functionality is the same. Version 2.5.9 offers backward compatibility down to System 7.6.1, while Bernie 3.0 and 2.6 will only run on MacOS 8.5 or later.

We've had to make a number of tough design decision. We don't really like the concept of supporting multiple environments, so the current 3.0 release requires MacOS 8.5 or later. This is due to a very insane compatibility snafu on Apple's part. (They do not support the Appearance 1.1 API in older OS releases. The Appearance updater got stuck at some earlier API stage.)

We understand that this is not exactly what some of you want, after all Bernie is about backward compatibility. In the meantime, we're kindly asking users of 7.6.1, MacOS 8 and MacOS 8.1 to use the 2.5.9 or 2.5.1 release you will find on this CD. We have also included the 'Appearance Manager' in case you need to install that on your system. Please read the 'Appearance SDK Read Me' file before you attenpt to install it.

We would like to emphasize at this point that Bernie goes completely untested and unsupported with anything earlier than MacOS 8.5.

Installing Bernie

After reading the instructions below, open the Bernie ][ The Rescue 3.0 folder, and read the Read Me 3.0 file. This will explain the changes in the Preview version. Now read the License & Registration Info' file to find out how to register Bernie. If you have purchased a pre-registered version of Bernie ][ The Rescue, or have already registered your copy, you can skip this step.

Before you can use Bernie, you must make an image of the ROM in your IIgs. You can read how to make this file by dropping the file Bernie Support on to your Web Browser, and then reading the section on Installing a ROM dump. If you already have a copy of either the ROM 01 or ROM 03 ROM from a previous installation of Bernie, you can use those files with Bernie ][ The Rescue 3.0.

Copy the entire Bernie ][ The Rescue 3.0 folder from the CD to the hard drive on your computer, and place the ROM image created from your IIgs into that folder. Now copy the Boot Drive file from the Drive Images folder to that folder as well. Optionally you can copy the Utilities Drive image and an Empty Drive image. Do not copy the entire CD to your hard drive, as the icons in the CD folder may interfere with the correct operation of Bernie ][ The Rescue.

With the ROM image file installed, Bernie will now boot just like a real IIgs, and just like the real thing, will let you work with a combination of floppy disks or Hard Disks. Some people have found it difficult to prepare their first Hard Disk image, and to install System 6.0.1 on it. We have saved you the trouble of doing this yourself, by providing you with a Hard Disk Image ready for use right out of the box! To use this disk image, copy the Boot Drive file from the Drive Images folder to your working Bernie folder on your hard disk.

Preparing Bernie for use

Start up Bernie and enter your name in the box when asked. If you have not yet registered Bernie, select the Not Yet... button to carry on booting the demo version. If you have already registered Bernie, enter your personal information and serial number as requested. This must be exactly as it is shown on your registration certificate. Once Bernie is running, you should see the familiar rolling ball IIgs boot screen.

Select the Mount Disk... item from the File menu, and mount the copy of the Boot Drive file that you have put into your Bernie folder. Next select the Preferences... menu item from the Setup menu, and scroll down and click the Storage icon. Now click on the button marked Select Startup Disk or Folder' and select the same copy of the Boot Drive image that you have just mounted. Close the Preferences dialog to complete the simple setup procedure.

You are now ready to run your virtual IIgs!

Select Reset from the Setup menu, and click the Reset button. If you have followed all the steps correctly so far, you will see your virtual IIgs booting into System 6.0.1. From now on, every time you start Bernie ][ The Rescue, you will boot directly to the Finder at the IIgs desktop.

Note that the Boot Drive we have provided not only has System 6.0.1 installed, but also has had the HFS FST patched to cure the infamous HFS bug. For your convenience, we have also installed the InkMeister driver and the Bernie.Enabler system setup file to activate the new Total Integration feature in Bernie ][ The Rescue 3.0.

Using Bernie

To get the most from Bernie, and to understand how to use it correctly, we have provided you with three ways of getting help on the CD. If you are new to Bernie, you should read through all the files we have provided for you. To read the Support screens, either double-click the 'Web Support' icon to go online to the Bernie Support Centre, or just drop the 'Bernie Support' icon onto your Web Browser to read the same files offline. You can also read the Bernie User Manual by dropping the 'User Manual' icon on to your Web Browser.

On the Utilities Hard Drive Image we have provided for you, you will find many useful programs that you may wish to use with your virtual IIgs. If you own Spectrum 2.5.2, and have a Syndicomm account, you may wish to install SOAR as your premiere offline reader! To use this Utilities disk, you will need to mount a copy of this Disk Image from the File menu as you did with the Boot Drive.

If the Boot Drive does not give you enough working space to hold all your programs, it is easy to add some extra Hard Drive Images. You can either create them yourself from within Bernie, or just make as many copies as you like of the Empty Drive image we have provided for you. You will need to name each one with a different name.

Updating Bernie

If a new version of Bernie is released at any time in the future, you will only need to download the updated archive from the Bernie web site, and install the updated Bernie application to keep up to date. We shall release a new version of this CD at each new release of Bernie, and you can optionally obtain the new CD from Syndicomm if you wish. Although you will need to purchase the new CD, you will not require to re-register your copy of Bernie.

You can order further copies of the Bernie ][ Starter Kit CD from Syndicomm by going to the web page <http://www.a2central.com>. You can also order copies of the TABBS CD-ROM through Syndicomm as well. The TABBS CD-ROM holds a vast collection of Apple II and IIgs software. Almost all the software you will probably ever need!

What next?

There are a number of people who still actively support the Apple IIgs, from publishing regular magazines, to developing software. There is also an online home for the Apple II at <http://www.a2central.com> or by telnetting to <syndicomm.com>, where you can talk to other IIgs enthusiasts and ask questions from the experts.

Juiced.GS is a quarterly, printed publication available by subscription only. A subscription for the U.S. and Canada is $18, elsewhere in the world it is $26. To subscribe, contact Syndicomm direct, or got to <http://www.a2central.com> and follow the links.

The Apple II Web Ring at <http://www.syndicomm.com/a2web/a2webring.html> will lead you to all the important Apple II web sites. There are quite a number of these, so browse and enjoy!
